Another console, another two three (or four) Dynasty Warriors games from Koei. Yes, we're only Dynasty Warriors 6 at point, if count smaller releases like Dynasty Warriors Extreme Legends, Dynasty Warriors Empries, quite a collection of games franchise's belt. Dynasty Warriors 6 Empires latest addition collection. Though a follow-up main-release, Dynasty Warriors 6, Empires a standalone game--you don't need own a copy of Dynasty Warriors 6 play. it's certainly a different take series, which somewhat refreshing, not good.
Empires approaches Three Kingdoms story from a different angle than usual Dynasty Warriors games in incorporates more strategy elements. That's correct, Dynasty Warriors Empires not a straight action beat'em-up like many other entries in series. In Empries, you'll control officer like usual, goal take control of all of regions of world map bring all of China rule. You'll still massive battles of course, in between battles, you'll take orders from ruler, strategize make sure campaign successful.
There a new time-system in place Empires, every month, take a designated number of actions. Actions anything from entering a battle, befriending a vagrant officer. Once actions used month, you'll need advance next month in order continue campaign. key is, advance timeline, other armies doing their own thing, such taking over more more territories from from each other. So do need efficient make good use of actions. Every couple of months, ruler also give direct orders--things like "Protect region from attack," "Invade region." called assignments, completing them not only earn more regions ruler, strengthen officer army. because DW6 Empires employs a pretty thorough leveling system officer his associated weapon. just way able level them up.
In addition leveling through completing assignments, purchase skills items, even forge weapon. Forging weapons interesting addition game, allows some customization of officer. example, forge weapon add a life-leech ability, so doing damage enemies also heals officer. add another ability increase range of weapon tremendously. plenty of options, not all of which easily attainable. Certain items required forge certain abilities weapons, some of items much more rare than others. In addition forging weapons, Empires allows map four purchased abilities X, A, B, Y buttons use in battle. abilities a limited time effect after trigger them, make difference in a tough battle with another officer a large group of enemies. It's a nice addition, offers even more customization of chosen officer.
Unfortunately, even with forging of weapons special abilities, combat in Empires very, very lacking. In fact, makes previous Dynasty Warriors games look like Soul Calibur. I say because absolutely no different combos in Empires. my play through, I literally would just press X button attack nonstop, maybe with a Y thrown in good measure. In previous games, different combinations of X Y would perform different combos, useful in certain situations. Without this, combat really boring repetitive. In addition this, Musou attacks seem very generic. I remember back in day Gan Ning would run through sea of enemies, sword outstretched ready kill triggered his Musou attack. In Empires, Gan Ning performs a generic, uninspired attack trigger his Musou. really cuts back differentiation personality of characters. makes combat even more boring.
What saves Empires from its repetitive gameplay so much between battles. I've already covered a good deal of this, Empires another trick its sleeve. At some point in campaign, option overthrow ruler. If successful in battle, officer become a ruler himself. means now officer his own army, consisting of befriended officers their troops, begin own campaign rule China. Rulers play certain "cards" each month provide them with special abilities in battle. perhaps highlight of strategy side of game, earning cards playing them at right point in campaign make difference between success failure.
As a fan of Dynasty Warriors series, I say I'm a little disappointed with latest entry. some nice ideas, there's not enough polish any of them really make game shine. combat more problems than simply a lack of polish. If Koei combine combat/gameplay elements of main series with some of interesting strategic ideas presented in Empires, they'd probably find themselves with a blockbuster title. then we wouldn't deal with lackluster follow-ups main entries in series.
Gameplay: 6.3
Besides combat being boring repetitive, camera entirely too sensitive difficult control. frustrating at times you're being attacked you're fumbling control camera. Also, defending almost useless in game, so I suggest button-mashing its fullest extent.
Graphics: 5.5
The graphics actually pretty disappointing. of strengths of Dynasty Warriors tons tons of enemies on-screen at once, so graphics been a little subpar account . I really expected better out of next-gen entry in series. doesn't look like much of improvement over old PS2 games.
Sound: 7.2
The voiceovers seem improved, much less cheesy than usual. Hacking slashing heavy metal music still odd, earned a place in my heart point.
Difficulty: Medium
There actually five levels of difficulty in DW6 Empires, so a wide range of choices. said, even playing normal, encounter some very frustratingly difficult missions until officer levels a bit.
Concept: 7.1
A valiant attempt Koei at breathing some new life into Dynasty Warriors series. Unfortunately them, us, it's really not fun original series. My suggestion take combat from Empires supplant with combat from main series.
Overall: 6.4
I really can't say I recommend title, especially Dynasty Warriors 6 sitting shelf right next . Unless of course, you're a Dynasty Warriors fanatic, want get a new take series. In case, some interesting facets Empires. In most other cases, stick main series some straight, no-nonsense action.
